Guru Purnima 2024
Guru Purnima is a major spiritual occasion for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains worldwide. It is observed on the full moon day, or Purnima, in the Hindu month of Aashaadha (June–July).
It falls on July 21st this year. The purpose of the day is to show reverence and gratitude for mentors and instructors, or “Gurus.” Derived from the Sanskrit terms “Gu” (meaning darkness) and “Ru” (meaning dispeller), the term “Guru” refers to one who dispels ignorance and brings insight.
On this day, disciples of the spiritual path demonstrate their devotion and appreciation to their mentors, ask for their blessings, and partake in activities that foster enlightenment.
The Enduring Bond – Guru and Disciple
The Guru (Spiritual Mentor) holds a paramount position in disciple’s life. The Guru is not merely a teacher but a guide, mentor, and spiritual leader who leads disciples from ignorance to knowledge, from darkness to enlightenment.
The Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher-student) tradition is a revered practice in Hindu culture, emphasizing the importance of the transmission of spiritual knowledge through direct guidance.
The essence of the Guru’s role is captured in the Guru Gita, a revered scripture found in the Skanda Purana. The Guru Gita highlights the Guru’s pivotal role in the disciple’s spiritual journey, stating that the Guru is the embodiment of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
A Guru: Enlightened Guide and Mentor
The Guru is a mentor, a role model, and a catalyst for the disciple’s spiritual awakening. In many traditions, the guru is seen working as a bridge between the person and the divine, offering spiritual knowledge and teachings that lead to enlightenment and self realization.
Gurus ignite a spark within their disciples inspiring them to confront their fears, embrace their true nature, and embark on a path of self-realization. Their preaching continue to guide seekers of truth across the globe, demonstrating the profound impact that a guru can have on human consciousness and the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.
The True Disciple: Epitome of Reverence and Dedication
A true disciple (shishya) has deep respect, trust, and devotion for his spiritual mentor. Disciple urges for the guidance of his guru to learn spiritualism, gain wisdom, and overcome personal and spiritual difficulties.
A true disciple follows the path shown by his master for attaining wisdom and enlightenment. He tries best to bring a divine transformation in life.
One of the Buddha’s disciples name Sariputra attained enlightenment. Then Buddha told him to go into the world and to carry on Buddha’s work by spreading awareness about immortality of God’s name. Sariputra left Buddha but crying and crying.
According to him, “the joy of being at the feet of Buddha was beyond all pleasures of two realms.”

A Legend about True Relationship of Guru – Shishya
The Eklavya Story: The tale of Eklavya and Dronacharya is among the most well-known guru-shishya relationships. A young lad from a tribal clan named Eklavya aspired to study archery with the legendary guru Dronacharya.
He was not a Kshatriya, though; therefore, Dronacharya declined to instruct him. Unbothered, Eklavya sculpted a statue of Dronacharya and practiced in front of it. His talent and commitment became renowned.
Upon discovering Eklavya’s skills, Dronacharya requested Eklavya’s thumb as a “guru dakshina,” or teacher’s fee. Eklavya willingly provided it, exhibiting the deep regard and selflessness he had for his guru.
