The festival of lights, Diwali, is also known by another name called ‘Deepavali’, which is commemorated through 5-day long festivals, beginning with Dhanteras which is celebrated on October 23, Choti Diwali, the main Diwali celebrations, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. The magnificence and greatness of the festival as such, there are also celebrations held across various nations. Diwali remains one of the most well-known Hindu festivals and is celebrated with lots of joy and happiness in the country. According to ancient Hindu mythology, the festival of lights is commemorated to applaud the triumph and victory of lord Rama over the Demon King Ravana and subsequently, the victory of light over darkness, good over evil.


As per Hindu epics and beliefs, Diwali is celebrated as the victory of lord Rama over Ravana and Rama’s return to his home, Ayodhya, after winning against evil king Ravana. He came back to Ayodhya, after spending 14 years in eviction, with his wife Sita, and brother Lakshman. To celebrate the welcome, the entire kingdom was filled with light with festive Diyas and lights. To commemorate this event, People celebrate Diwali by decorating their houses with traditional earthen lamps (Diyas) and candles and making sure every entrance and boundary is twinkling with lights. It is also believed that Goddess Lakshmi descends from heaven to visit her devotees and bless them. To share happiness and people also visit their near and dear ones, exchange sweets, wishes, and gifts, and plan for a get-together.
