History of National Science Day

National Science Day is celebrated today to raise awareness about the importance of science in our daily lives by acknowledging the contributions made by our scientists in this field.  But the origin of this day dates back to 28 February 1928, when Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman discovered an unprecedented phenomenon of scattering photons, which was later coined after him as the “Raman effect”.  For this remarkable discovery he won the Nobel Prize in 1930, which was India’s first Nobel Prize in science.

So to celebrate this unprecedented discovery, to designate 28 February as National Science Day the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) urged the Government of India.  And on 28 February 1987 we celebrated the very first National Science Day.

Importance of Science Day

The main objective of celebrating National Science Day is to encourage the Indian youth to develop an interest in science and understand its importance.  On this day, students from across the country participate in state-level and national-level competitions to showcase their science projects.

Origin of Science Day

World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated every year on 10 November since 2002 to commemorate the commitment made at the World Conference on Science in Budapest in 1999.

The purpose of that event was, among other things, to articulate a new social contract for science, to ensure the responsible use of knowledge from all areas of science, and to prevent its misuse.

The commemoration of World Science Day seeks to renew the commitment to science for peace and development by emphasizing that science can help eradicate poverty, and raise public awareness of the importance of science and the relationship between science and society.  Can bridge the gap between.
