It’s a common sight these days, especially in metro cities, youth gathered in corners and at small shops, smoking cigarettes and other drugs. With a huge culture shift, youngsters move out of homes, towns and cities, away from their parents in pursuit of education and a better life. This physical distance separates the parents from children emotionally too. Without parental guidance and in the high of this newly found freedom, youth falls prey to the momentary pleasures.

It’s been long that the drug addiction was a problem associated with Punjab only. Today, India sees a shocking 10 suicides related to drug abuse out of which only one is from Punjab.
Around 3 million of Indian population is drug addict. The data provided by National Crime Records Bureau shows that the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the top most afflicted states in India.
There are several organizations working for rehabilitation of the drug addicts. Let’s know about some of them.
Naya Savera, Himachal Pradesh
Naya Savera is a non-profit organisation which established its first Drug De-addiction and Rehabilitation Facility in 2008, in Himachal Pradesh. Today it is running a centre in Himachal Pradesh and another one in Delhi.
Phoenix Foundation, Hyderabad
Phoenix Foundation is a Hyderabad based Rehabilitation Centre for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Addiction. Teams of dedicated and motivated therapists and staff members work towards treating addiction.
Dera Sacha Sauda, Haryana
The socio-spiritual non-profit organisation Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa, Haryana is the only one of it’s kind where the drug addicts are blessed with true method of meditation by Saint Dr Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan, which helps in both physical and spiritual growth. The Green ‘S’ Welfare Force Wing organises awareness campaigns and rallies regularly.
Anti Tobacco Day
World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31st by the UN members nations, with an objective to spread awareness and offer help to the addicts.
Meditation and Spirituality expand the dimension of our mind and we realize the existence of life beyond what we see. The self-pity, the sadness which consumes our mind is overpowered by the exuberant thoughts of the self-awareness.
Lastly, some people are fortunate enough to get help from the loved ones, while there are many who go unnoticed and don’t manage to get help. The drug addicts need our actions of help more than they need our sympathy or pity.
So, let’s start by accepting them and supporting them emotionally, at our end.
