World day of the sick: History

Pope John Paul II was affected by Alzheimer’s disease in 1991 and after the diagnosis he decided to start a day for people who are suffering from any kind of sickness so that masses together pray for the wellbeing of them. The day falls on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and it is a pivotal celebration among people in the Catholic Health Ministry to cherish the humanity all around.

In 1992, Pope John Paul II initiated the world day of the sick to pray for individuals who are suffering along their caretakers. In his apostolic letter ‘’Salvifici Doloris’’, the Pope mentioned about the suffering and considered that it has been a retrieving process via Christ. The first World Day of the Sick was observed on February 11, 1993.
