What is World Milk Day?

Established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN (United Nations), World Milk Day is celebrated across the world on June 1, each year since 2001.

The day is aimed to help people recognize the significance of milk as an important global food. Apart from being a good source of nutrition, milk, and dairy products are also a means of livelihood for millions of people across the globe.

In India too, milk is more than just a dietary need. It has proved to be a great weapon to fight malnutrition and is also supporting the livelihood of millions of Indian people. Being self-sufficient in milk production, India is one of the largest producers of milk in the world.

What is the significance of the day?

World Milk day is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of milk and dairy products in the economy, industries, and our daily lives. The day serves as an objective to educate masses about the nutrients that are present in milk like calcium, protein, vitamins, potassium, etc.

The theme for World Milk Day 2021 is ‘ Sustainability in the dairy sector. The aim of the celebration is to aware people of the environment, nutrition, and socio-economics of milk production, distribution, and consumption.

For example, Milk is not just a morning glass or beverage, it holds sacred importance.
