Jamshed JiJi Irani – The Steel Man of India dies at 86

Tata Industries limited had two strong pillars named Jamshed Tata and Jamshed JiJi Irani. Jamshed Tata Ji founded this flourishing industry and Jamshed JiJi Irani took the industry to heights. He came to be known as the Steel Man of India because of his work and vision toward the growth and development of steel industries in India.

Born on 2 Jne 1936 in Nagpur, Jamshed Irani passed away at 86 on 31 October 2022

Let’s take a look at the commendable life that he lived
•He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and Master of Science degree in Geology from Nagpur University in 1958.
•He completed his Masters in Metallurgy in 1960 and PhD in Metallurgy in 1963. University of Sheffield, UK.
• Later, Jamshed J Irani joined the British Iron and Steel Research Association in 1963 as a Senior Scientific Officer in Sheffield. He was promoted to head of the Physical Metallurgical Division there.
•He later returned to India and joined the Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO, now Tata Steel) in 1968 as an assistant to the director in charge of research and development.
•He was appointed General Manager in 1978, General Manager in 1979,Was promoted as Chairman in 1985, Managing Director in 1992 and Director in 1998.
•He retired from Tata Steel in 2001.
•Irani joined the board of Tata Motors in June 1993 and also served as a director with Tata Sons.
•In 2004, the government appointed him as the chairman of the Expert Committee for the formation of the new Companies Act of India.
• He retired from all positions in Tata companies in 2011. He was the Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow.
• He and his sister Diana Hormusji founded the Jiji Irani Challenge Cup.

Awarded with Padma Bhushan
Jamshed JiJi Irani was also a Padma Bhushan awardee. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan for his immense contribution in the steel industry.

He was a legend who left behind strong marks that show what a wonderful contribution he did behind the success of the Tata Group today. His work towards the country’s steel industry can never be forgotten. It’s a matter of grief that we lost The Steel Man Of India.
